Description: Sex and sexual behavior are not commonly broached topics in group therapy. When they are, it’s typically with the assumption that traditional, heteronormative monogamous relationships are the default baseline from which other sexual relationships or behaviors deviate, which can be experienced as oppressive to clients who engage in relationships and dynamics considered "non-traditional". In addition, culturally competent clinicians, in their efforts to be inclusive and avoid shaming, may avoid engaging with clients about how their relationships may relate to their presenting problem or therapeutic work in group. As a result, clients may miss out on the opportunity to connect with and be understood by the therapist and group members.

In our discussion, we will explore how to work with our non-monogamous, poly, and kinky clients in ways that honor their relationships and experiences while also addressing dynamics that may be interfering with their connections with themselves and others.
