Please join us on February 6 for a workshop led by Jessica Fink, LCSW-S. Jessica has 19 years of experience in the field, and a virtual private practice in Austin, Tx. Her specialties are sleep disorders, chronic pain, OCD, PTSD, and Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy. She considers herself a therapist for anxious rule followers who hold life too tightly.
Event Description
People who avoid emotion and live according to rigid self-imposed rules are prevalent in clinical populations; they are often referred to process groups to combat their isolation and difficulty connecting with others. While a process group is an excellent environment to work on building connections, people who maladaptively overcontrol will likely experience therapy groups as overwhelming and aversive. Unless adequately prepared with skills and understanding, a person with over controlling defenses will be unable to gain the benefits of a process group.
This presentation will provide an overview of maladaptive overcontrol and Radically Open DBT, the modality designed to treat it. We will review some of the expected behaviors in a group setting for individuals who chronically seek control in their lives emotionally, relationally and environmentally. Interventions for group therapists will be presented, as well as recommendations to prepare candidates prior to group.
